Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase II Set for December Completion, Four Stations to Open
Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase II is expected to be completed in December, adding four stations between Kashigaon and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. Find out how the extension could improve connectivity and cut travel time by 50 to 75 per cent.
The extension will cover four stations: Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. MMRDA expects civil construction and systems work to be completed before inviting the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) to inspect the corridor. The inspection will establish whether the section meets the required safety standards for passenger operations.
The development follows the opening of the first phase of Metro Line 9, which runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon and began public operations in April 2026. Metro Line 9 extends Metro Line 7, which connects Dahisar East with Gundavali in Andheri East. Once the entire corridor becomes operational, residents of Mira-Bhayandar will have a direct metro connection towards Andheri and other parts of Mumbai’s suburban metro network.
The new section is intended to provide commuters with an alternative to road travel and crowded Western Railway suburban services. The corridor runs parallel to the Western Express Highway, one of the region’s busiest routes, where congestion frequently affects journeys between Mumbai’s western suburbs and Mira-Bhayandar. According to MMRDA estimates, the metro line could reduce travel time by 50 to 75 per cent, depending on prevailing traffic conditions, potentially making peak-hour journeys more predictable.
Mira-Bhayandar’s expanding residential population has increased demand for transport links to Mumbai’s employment centres. Commuters currently depend largely on road transport and suburban trains, making the proposed metro extension an additional option for journeys affected by delays and overcrowding.
The impact on road congestion and demand for suburban rail services will depend on passenger uptake, service frequency and the convenience of interchange with Metro Line 7. With the December completion target approaching, the remaining construction and systems work, followed by the CMRS inspection and safety certification, remain the immediate requirements before Metro Line 9 Phase II can open to passengers.
